Joy Is the Presence of God...

There are certain people whose lives become a testimony long before they ever speak a word. Joni Eareckson Tada is one of those people.

At just 17 years old, Joni’s life was forever changed when a diving accident left her paralyzed from the shoulders down. In a moment, the future she had imagined for herself looked completely different. The dreams she had, the things she wanted to do, and the simple freedoms most of us take for granted were suddenly changed forever.

She would never walk again on this side of heaven.

And yet, somehow, through all the pain, disappointment, and unanswered prayers, Joni found something far greater than the healing she longed for.

She found the presence of God.

Her life has deeply impacted my own walk with the Lord because she has shown me what it truly means to have faith when circumstances don't change. It is easy to trust God when prayers are answered the way we hoped. It is easy to praise Him when life is going well.

But what happens when God says, “My grace is enough,” instead of giving us the answer we wanted?

Joni’s life is a beautiful picture of that kind of faith.

She has never stopped believing that God is good, even though He never restored her ability to walk on this earth. She has never allowed her suffering to become greater than her Savior. Instead of letting her circumstances define her, she allowed God to use them for His glory.

God didn't save her by removing every hardship.

He saved her by walking with her through every hardship.

And through that journey, He used her life to bring hope, encouragement, and truth to millions of people around the world.

I often think about how different her story would have been if God had healed her physically shortly after her accident. It would have been an incredible testimony of God's power.

But there is also something incredibly powerful about the testimony of someone who has endured decades of suffering and can still say, “God is faithful.”

Her wheelchair did not limit God's purpose for her life.

Her pain did not disqualify her from being used by God.

Her unanswered prayers did not mean God had forgotten her.

Instead, God took the very thing that could have broken her and used it to strengthen her faith and impact countless others.

Romans 5:3-5 reminds us:

"Not only so, but we also glory in our sufferings, because we know that suffering produces perseverance; perseverance, character; and character, hope. And hope does not put us to shame, because God's love has been poured out into our hearts through the Holy Spirit, who has been given to us." 

This is the very truth we see throughout Scripture. God never wastes our suffering. He uses the difficult seasons of our lives to shape us, strengthen us, and draw us closer to Him.

That is the kind of faith that challenges me.

Joni has reminded me that joy is not found in having a perfect life. Joy is not found when every problem disappears or when every prayer is answered exactly the way we want.

Joy is found in knowing that God is present.

He is present in the waiting.

He is present in the pain.

He is present in the uncertainty.

He is present in the moments when we don't understand what He is doing.

The world tells us that happiness comes when we avoid suffering. But God shows us that joy can exist even in the middle of suffering because He never leaves us there alone.

Joni has spent her life pointing people to Jesus. She has shown that a life surrendered to God can have incredible purpose—even when that life doesn't look anything like we imagined.

One day, when she steps into eternity, she will experience the healing she has waited for. She will stand, walk, and run in the presence of her Savior.

But until that day comes, she continues to walk in a way that matters even more—she walks by faith.

And that may be the greatest lesson she has ever taught me:

God's greatest gift is not always changing our circumstances.

Sometimes it is revealing His presence in the middle of them.

Because joy isn't found in the absence of suffering.

Joy is found in the presence of God.
