On June 28, 1776, the Committee of Five presented the first draft of the Declaration of Independence to the Continental Congress. COUNTDOWN To Our America 250 Anniversary Celebration!
The Committee of Five consisted of Thomas Jefferson, John Adams, Benjamin Franklin, Roger Sherman, and Robert R. Livingston. Jefferson wrote the initial draft, and the committee reviewed it before submitting it to Congress.
Congress debated edits in the document before adopting the final Declaration of Independence in the days to come.
