John uses the example of Jesus here in v.16 for two reasons. First, Christ is a model for us to emulate. Christ as God's Son possessed more than we can ever imagine; yet he did not keep what he had selfishly but gave of himself voluntarily for others. Second, Jesus' death is also a revelation of God's work on our behalf: "Christ laid down His life for us" (v.16). Jesus' death is not merely an ethical model; it is a genuine offering and giving of his life.
