A Week In Review...

This past week T had to get back into the swing of training again.  By the end of the week his speed was improving a lot.  That is really good.  Praying and Hoping that T improves more as each week goes by and as he learns to have more confidence in what he's doing and as he learns to trust himself more.  He's learning so much right now because of moving to a new division.  It's a lot to take in but he's up for the task.  We know he can do what needs to be done.

With a new division means that the pressure on the electronic chest gear that is used also changes.  He now needs to learn to apply more pressure when doing his techniques.  It's something he has to keep in mind when he's sparring so that he kicks with more pressure to the chest gear when he is fighting a match.  Everything for T is electronic now which includes the headgear.  He will learn so much as he goes through this year in a new division.

Today we came home to spend time with Scot and will go back to Matthews tomorrow evening.  It's good to be home even if it's just for twenty-four hours...LOL!

Here are some pictures I took today of T while he was training with his teammates:

His teammates challenge him and keep him humble.  Over all it's been a good week.

USAT North Carolina

USAT North Carolina just posted this on Facebook earlier today:

Good afternoon athletes, coaches, and parents, It is with great regret that I must inform you that the NCTKD Federation will not be hosting a Qualifying State Championships this year due to USATKD protest. As the protest is ongoing, officials are not at liberty to discuss any details. We do, however, apologize for the inconvenience this may cause. Please continue to train, and support development events we will have in the future. Thank You - NCTKD Federation

I just wish everyone could get along and stop all the politicking in this sport so that our athletes could do what they love without adding stress by doing stuff like this. Now T will have to travel to qualify for USAT Nationals. At least we don’t have these issues with AAU.  So thankful for that!!!

Busy Days...

It’s been a very busy several days since T has been getting back into the swing of things. His coach is increasing cardio in order to increase T’s endurance. Doing more technique training to sharpen and learn the techniques he needs to use when he fights.

T has been practicing his Forms also in order to get ready for AAU GA State. He will be fighting and doing his forms at that event.

We’ve been focusing on school as well and it’s been a challenge to keep him on task. He has so much he needs to do and keep up with in a days time. He’s having to learn to make good use of every ounce of his time. It’s very frustrating for me at times because all he wants to do is rest when he’s not training and while I get that he needs to push through and focus on his school work as well. I know doing school is not very important to him and I don’t see him going to a University someday. Maybe a Community College but not regular college.

Now it’s time to go to bed so we can do a repeat of training tomorrow. There is never a dull moment. We’ve been asked not to post any videos so you won’t be seeing any. Maybe I’ll get some pictures at some point though just so you can see T😁.

Friday Night at Team Training

This is the first video I’m posting from the new building that T’s sparring team moved into. This video has Zac and T training together. Zac challenges and pushes T to be better and get better. He may be 20 pounds heavier but that’s all good because it helps T to put forth more effort and really work on his techniques. There’s lots of learning going on in this video.

“Parting is such sweet sorrow😢”

We had to say bye to Scot and our dog, Tucker, today. He came down to help us get settled in for the month while T trains with his coach and team to get ready for US Open. He is now driving home to get ready for the work week ahead. I will be making more posts and doing a bunch of FaceTime this next month. So glad that if we can’t be together that we can at least see one another. So thankful that technology has come this far that we can do this. Back when I was growing up we’d have to pay for long distance calls and those would be few and far between because it was so expensive. As for that aspect of technology I’m very thankful it’s advanced like it has.

T is now on the phone with a friend and playing a game on his Switch with him. Extended stay living is made much easier for me when he can do that.

After Class Tonight

Tonight we got surprised by Carolina Kick’s giving out plaques to the kids who went to Nationals this past summer. It was basically so they could let them know how proud they are of all that they are accomplishing. Here’s what it looks like:

At Hotel and Checked In

We arrived around 4pm today to the hotel. Unloaded in the rain😕. Scot and Tucker came with us to help us get set up and so Scot can watch the team training session tomorrow. Preparing for a months stay is no easy task. So glad to have help. Scot will be coming to us over the next month so that we don’t go the entire time without seeing him. Fun times. Now to go to team training.

"We're Leaving in a Mini Van...."

I took my queue from the song "I'm leaving on a jet plane..." for this post...LOL!

We leave for an entire month today.  A month of hard training.  And when no training is happening we will be plugging along with schoolwork.  It's a busy life with an Elite Athlete and we have to make the most of the time we have getting ready for competitions and making sure we stay on task with school.

In two weeks will be his first competition at the AAU GA Qualifier.  Then two weeks after will be US Open in Florida.

We are hoping and praying that this month with his coach doing private lessons and team training gives T the push he needs to get him over the hump and making forward motion in this new age and weight division that he is in this year.  It's an entirely new ball game for him right now.  He's having to learn a lot and train a lot in order to be competitive in his new division.  We are focusing on gains this year.  Whether his competitions are wins or learns (losses) the focus is the gains he makes in those competitions.  What he learns from them as we go forward and applying them.  We are focusing on gaining knowledge that will help him moving forward in this sport.  The results will come even if they don't come the way we may like them to come at first.  With not knowing what to expect in this new division we will be learning a lot.  We are doing our best to encourage T to keep moving forward no matter whether a competition is a Win or Learn.  Win or Learn there are always gains to be had.

I will be making posts as we go through this month ahead to keep everyone informed on what gains we are taking from competitions and training.  T has an incredible coach and we are so thankful that God brought us to him.  T has already expressed what it is that he wants out of this year.  As he gets more knowledge he makes adjustments to what he wants and we are constantly checking in with him to make sure of what it is that he wants.  So look forward to more posts from us.  They will be coming.

Engine Build continued...

The boys got more done on the engine build tonight. Here’s a couple of pics of them working on it.

TKD Class Tonight

Here’s a video of the fun T had at TaeKwonDo class tonight.

KiwiCo Builds from Earlier This Month

Here is a video of a couple of T’s KiwiCo Builds from earlier this month.

Building an Engine with Dad

T has been doing several science builds recently. This is his third build and he’s so enjoying doing them with his Dad😊. He’s learning a lot about how an engine works. I’ll have to take a video of one of the other builds he did that he really enjoyed and post it later.

Tournaments

So we are looking ahead and trying to plan. A lot rides on T and his performances at the locals as to how much big tournaments we do this year. As of now we are putting them on the calendar but in pencil so we can change things as we need to do so. Going to the Oregon one that you will see in the pic below can give T a “wild card” to attend Pan Ams in 2021 provided he performs well enough to earn it. So going to that one is kind of a big deal. The other two are National events and they are ones that are tournaments that T needs to attend so those we are planning on attending for now. A lot will ride on what his coach says and thinks. If he doesn’t think he’s ready then T won’t do them this year. He is very knowledgeable and we trust him. Like I said before though most of how things will get planned depends on T and how he does when he attends other tournaments. It’s his first year in a new age/weight division. A lot of changes happening this year. So a lot remains to be seen.

T’s Thighs

One would think 🤔 this happened from TaeKwonDo Sparring Training:

Nope👎!!!  He did this at a trampoline park this past Saturday. I told him when we walked in to meet his friend so they could hang out and have fun, “Don’t do anything stupid that could get you injured.”  Famous last words right...LOL!

He was challenged to do 3 back flips in a row on the really bouncy trampoline. The problem with that is that T arches his back ever so slightly so he never lands in the same place so he moved back a little then a little more until he got half way through the third flip then he hit the wall. To which my reaction was:

And then I looked at him when I knew he was going to be fine and said to him, “What did I tell you not to do?”  To which he promptly did the preteen/tween eye roll (which I hate😡 by the way) and he responded, “I know!”

The things kids do. I’m just glad it was a glancing blow and all he has are a couple of bruises which he says don’t hurt. I’ve never had a bruise that doesn’t hurt so I’m sure it hurts but he’s just not telling me it does and sucking it up because he knows he really messed up🙄.

Crazy nutty kid!  I love him so much!  But what a crazy nutty kid!

Reading Assignment

So in this new year as T gets himself focused to do what he needs to do in sparring and school he will be reading books that will help him on his journey and help improve his reading skills as well. This is what we are starting to read together now:

We read the introduction. Here are some of the highlights from the introduction:

“Positive thinking leads to positive outcomes.”

“Researchers have found that optimistic people live longer, have more success careers, make better decisions, are more productive, are less stressed, have healthier relationships, and (not surprisingly) are much happier than pessimists.”

“If you want to change your life, you have to first change your thinking.”

“Positive thinking is about responding to life’s obstacles with a positive never-back-down attitude.”

Here are some quotes from people you may know:

“Self-confidence is the first step towards success. If you believe it, you can achieve it.”  ~Tommy Lasorda

“So many players enter the game with the same approximate skills. The difference is not aptitude but attitude.”  ~Dave Winfield

“Things have a way of working themselves out if we remain positive.”  ~Lou Holtz

“Life’s battles don’t always go to the stronger or faster man. But sooner or later, the man who wins is the man who thinks he can.”  ~Vince Lombardi

Besides his bible studies T will be reading things that will keep his mind where it needs to be. Some we will read more than once because repetition is a good teacher.

Everyday we will read a couple of chapters and that will be the routine every day as part of his schooling on top of all his other schooling. We are going to pour the positives into him and pour some more and then pour some more until it comes oozing out of him and his entire demeanor changes for the better and the way he approaches training and his ring time changes for the better.

These are the things that athletes do over and over again in order to achieve their goals in any sport. The greats would have never been great without it!

Training Session with Dennis White Yeaterday

Dennis White is a regional coach for our part of the USA. Our sparring team got an invite from the school that was having him come to do training. It was a fun day. I took pictures mainly so T could see his bad habits that he needs to fix as he trains with his coach. They didn’t just do physical training but Dennis also talked to them as well. Dennis White is a detail man. He wants them to fully understand the details behind what he has them do. For a kid like T that was really good. This is a transition year for T. I liked what Dennis white had to say about the 11-15 year olds. These are years where they will grow a lot not only physically but also their mental growth and toughness. A lot of learning in this sport goes on in these years. You can have a kid not have their best years during these years and when they get to their senior years be the top athlete in this sport. And many times in this sport those that dominate in those 11-15 years may not dominate when they get to be seniors. That was encouraging to hear him talk about that. It was something that gave clarification so these kids don’t lose heart as they continue to press on in this sport. The ups and downs that they go through in these years are good for them. It’s gives them experience and experience is a great teacher. They learn what works and what doesn’t.  We are looking forward to all T will learn this year in a new division. He’s nervous about this year and that’s to be expected because he doesn’t know some of the opponents he will face this year. One of the things T liked that Dennis White said was about what to do before a fight. He told them relax. Listen to music. Play a video game, which is one of T’s favorite things to do for fun...LOL! He said the worst thing you could do is either train hard, which he never does. He just warms up. Or pace and be pay too much attention to your opponents. This sport is all about the mental game and if you don’t allow yourself to get psyched out before you fight then that puts you in a better place, mentally, when you get in the ring to fight. Here are a few pictures from the training yesterday.

T enjoyed training with this young man. He was good for T. He really challenged him and also showed T where he needs to fix some things.

T was watching the older guys here. The younger can always learn from the older. I’m glad that they have good examples to look up to.

I want to take a moment in this post to let you all know that we’ve been planning and crunching financial numbers for his training ahead. He will be with his coach an entire month starting on the 24th of this month. He will do a state qualifier during the time we are down there. It’s going to be busy with training, the state qualifier, and homeschooling and when Scot can get a day or two here and there from working he will be visiting us. We are hoping this month of training will give T the push he needs to get over the hump so to speak and get his bad habits broken and form new good habits that he can surprise he opponents with in the coming year😊.

God is faithful and on our own we are unable to do what he’s gifted/called us to do while we are here on this earth. He’s gifted T in TKD. He is like a baby duck to water where TKD is concerned. It’s a natural talent that he has for the sport and he loves what he does.

His ultimate goal is to one day have a Dojang of his own. I have no doubt that he will accomplish his goal. And by the time he’s old enough to open his own Dojang he should be close to going after his 5th Dan Black Belt if not his 6th Dan. He wants to continue with sparring first though. Kids change their minds about what they want as they grow so we’ll see if he continues to stick with wanting his own Dojang or not. So far he has. He’s even came up with a name for it. We’ll see if it’s still available to be able to network when/if he gets to that point of actually opening his own Dojang.

DG Today

T got the rare opportunity today to go have fun with a friend, Matt, at DG (Defy Gravity). He loves the trampoline parks but he especially loves DG. Here’s a video of him having fun jumping on the really bouncy trampoline. It’s only one at a time on it.

Cursive Writing...

So T will know how to write cursive and read cursive writing because one of the beautiful things about homeschooling is that we get to teach things that traditional education is beginning to move away from.  Some kids will never be able to read the original documents that were written in history and that saddens me when I think about it.  One of the things we would like to do as we go throughout this school year is take T to Washington DC and take him to all the museums for him to see and read some of the documents that were written in cursive writing.  He's growing up so fast and our time to really influence him is getting shorter.  We will always strive to influence him but the window we have with him at home and being able to influence him is what I'm talking about that's getting shorter.

Here's a picture of him doing his cursive writing.

Back To School

Getting back into the swing of school after the holidays is always difficult.  It was nice to have the break but now it's time to get down to business and do our best to get ahead in schoolwork.  The whole purpose in getting ahead is because of how busy the competition and training schedule will be moving forward.  Homeschooling is always a challenge and a balancing act.  Smooth days are rare with all we generally have to get done in a day but we push through regardless.
